Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about joining and participating in MurrCal Cycling (grades 5–12)

What does the team do?

+

Our team's mission is to have fun riding bikes while developing skills, fitness, and confidence. We support every athlete in reaching their own goals—whether that means racing competitively or simply enjoying group rides with friends.

There's no single definition of success here. Each rider decides how competitive they want to be, and we'll help them improve as much as they choose. No matter their goals, every member is an important part of the team.

Where and when are practices?

+

The season typically kicks off at a location that allows us to assess each rider's skills and ensure they're ready for trail riding. For those who need a bit of extra practice, it's the perfect environment to build confidence and develop the fundamentals.

As the team progresses, we transition to the Bo Beckett Memorial Trail (BBMT) at Kentucky Dam State Park and the Livingston County Trail System (LCTS). Once everyone is comfortable and confident on the trails, we progress to the Canal Loop in Land Between the Lakes (LBL).

Practice Schedule:

  • Tuesday nights (approximately 2 hours)
  • Thursday nights (approximately 2 hours)
  • Saturday mornings (approximately 3 hours)

Where are races?

+

Races are held at various locations throughout Kentucky as part of the Kentucky Interscholastic Cycling League (KICL).

What does a race weekend look like?

+

Race weekends take place over Saturday and Sunday. We typically travel to the race venue on Saturday for a pre-ride—a relaxed ride around the course to review strategy, identify obstacles, and get comfortable with the terrain.

Sunday is race day, and the action starts early! Everyone—riders, coaches, and families—cheers for all participants, regardless of team. Details like start line procedures, feed zones, and race rules are best explained in person, so don't hesitate to ask a coach or experienced team member.

Most races and award ceremonies wrap up by 3:00 PM. Before heading home, everyone pitches in to help take down the course and pack up—it's part of the team spirit that makes these weekends so special.

What kind of bike do I need?

+

Great question! The right bike depends largely on your experience level and how competitive you want to be. The two most important factors are that your bike fits you properly and is in good working condition. Coaches are always happy to help you choose or evaluate a bike that suits your needs.

As a team member, you'll be a registered NICA rider, which means several bike manufacturers offer significant discounts. Our local partner, GearUp Cycles in Murray, also provides special pricing for student riders.

You can expect to pay a reasonable amount (after discount) for a quality entry-level race bike, though good used bikes are often available for half that cost or less.

What kind of equipment and clothing do I need?

+

Required:

  • Helmet - Every rider must wear a properly fitting helmet—no exceptions
  • Spare tube, tire tools, and bike pump or CO₂ cartridge - Required during all practices

Common Gear:

  • Pedals - Beginners typically start with "flat" pedals (standard pedals), while more advanced riders often switch to "clipless" pedals. These use special shoes that let riders both push down and pull up for better control and efficiency.
  • Gloves - Most riders wear gloves for better grip
  • Eye protection - Optional but recommended

Team Uniform: We issue team shirts which serve as our official uniform. The head coach will assist with ordering.

How much does a season cost?

+

Season costs include team dues. Each rider who races will also have expenses for:

  • Travel to race venues
  • Usually one night in a hotel per race weekend
  • Food during travel
  • Bike repairs and maintenance (varies greatly depending on quality of the bike and how hard the rider is on their equipment)

Contact the head coach for specific information about current season dues and estimated costs.

Do I have to race?

+

No. You do not have to race. If you choose not to race you will still be considered a full team member and you will be treated as such.

You will ride and practice with the team just like someone who will be racing. We will still push you to be the best you can be and achieve a race-ready level of skills and fitness.

What are the requirements for being a coach?

+

All NICA coaches complete registration, background checks, and training specific to their license level.

For full details on coach education and licensing requirements, see NICA’s Coach Education Requirements.

What is NICA and KICL?

+

NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) is the national sanctioning body. They:

  • Create the race rules
  • Provide training and certification programs
  • Provide insurance for practices and races

KICL (Kentucky Interscholastic Cycling League) is our state league. They operate as a state-level branch of NICA.

What is PitZone?

+

PitZone is the website where all riders and coaches are registered. The site also hosts the coach training modules.

All riders and coaches need access to PitZone—it is our gateway to the state and national league.

How do we communicate as a team?

+

We use a communications app that allows all riders, parents, and coaches to communicate in an open fashion that meets child safety requirements.

Everyone should join—including extended family who want to stay in the loop. Details will be provided when you join the team.
